Harvesting honey is an exciting and fun process. This is the time when all of your hard work pays off, and you finally get to enjoy this sweet treat. However, before you begin, there are a few things you should know to make the process easier. Here are three simple tips for harvesting honey.

This Great Bee Keeping Guide “Modern Beekeeping” Teaches You All You Need To Know so as to keep Your Own Healthy Bees and Produce Your Own Great Honey! Click Here To Download Adam Mills’s Modern Beekeeping Guide.

Prepare Your Area: As we all know, honey is extremely sticky. Every item you handle will become sticky (counter tops, tools, doorknobs, etc.) so you should contain the stickiness by working in a clean barn, on the porch, or in the garage rather than working in your kitchen.

Keep a bucket of water handy to rinse your hands and a clean towel to dry off with.

Set up all pieces of equipment and tools before handling the comb, and lay down a few drop cloths or newspapers on the floor.

Harvest In A Confined Area: Harvesting honey should be done in a closed room. This keeps the honey clean, and it helps to keep the bees from stealing it, and bringing it back to the hive.

Warm The Honey: Warm honey flows much easier than cold honey. This will allow you to spin the honey out of the comb faster, which results in more honey being extracted from the comb.

Warm honey also flows through strainers and filters much faster, without clumping up. Honey should be heated to about eighty degrees Fahrenheit (twenty-seven degrees Celsius) for optimal flow. Use caution to ensure you do not heat the honey too much or else you may melt the wax comb.

There are many great reasons for keeping honey bees. From harvesting honey, to collecting beeswax, and even crop pollination, bees serve many helpful purposes. Here are a few helpful tips for keeping honey bees on your property.

1. Feed Your Bees: While the bees are getting used to their new hive, or during cold weather months, you will need to provide food.

You will need to mix sugar syrup and administer it to the bees through use of a Boardman feeder, or by placing the syrup inside the top cover near the opening in the inner cover.

This type of feeding allows your bees to have access to the syrup, without attracting pests or intruders. It is important to note that bees consume a great deal when they are first establishing a hive, so make sure to check the syrup level often.

Once the bees begin to produce honey, you will no longer need to supply syrup, however you should leave some honey in the hive as a food source during the winter and early spring months.

2. Make Sure Water Is Handy: Bees need to have a proper water source, especially during warm weather months. Bees use water to cool down their hive during periods of hot and humid weather, and also use it as a dilution material during honey production.

That being said, you should never place a container of water too close to the hive because bees can drown quite easily.

3. Be Considerate: When keeping honey bees, you should always be considerate of others. Remember, you want the bees, your neighbors do not necessarily feel the same way.

A wooden fence around your hive can prove quite beneficial. Make sure you set the fence up in the same direction as the hive opening so the bees can fly over the fence and above nearby homes.

There are literally hundreds of products on the market, so how do you know what you truly need, and what is just a waste of money? Here are few recommendations to help get you on your way.

Hive Essentials: To ensure your bees are as productive as possible, you should make sure you have some basic pieces of equipment for the hive.

These items include: telescoping and inner covers for the outer roof and the ceiling of the hive; an entrance reducer to reduce the size of the entrance; a screened bottom board for the floor of the hive to keep pests out; medium supers for the hive walls; medium frames to serve as rooms in the hive to support the comb; small cell foundations; and some type of feeder for the sugar syrup. These items are readily available at just about any beekeeping supply store.

Nucleus Hive: Sometimes called “nucs”, “a nuc”, or “a nuc box”, this hive is a smaller version, more manageable version of a traditional hive. Nucs are made to hold fewer frames and to house a smaller population of bees.

Many beginning beekeepers opt to start out with this type of hive, and bees often flourish in this setting due to the fact that the smaller space makes it easier to regulate the temperature and humidity of the colony.

Gloves: Gloves should be worn for most of the time when working with bees. Non-ventilated, thick gloves made out of pigskin or heavy rubber are the most popular choices. Ventilated gloves are not recommended since bees can easily sting through them.

Keeping bees can be a very worthwhile hobby that can yield some great results, and some delicious honey. This hobby takes a bit of time to master, and there are some basic guidelines that need to be followed to ensure success.

Here are three simple tips for honey beekeeping.

1. Make Sure You Have Plenty Of Space: The first and most important step to beekeeping is to make sure you have plenty of room to keep your bees. At the very least, you will need a fairly good-sized backyard to set up your hives.

Anything smaller than a large backyard is not typically recommended, and may hinder your yield.

2. Ensure You Have A Natural Food Source: You will need to make sure you have a viable food source that is close to where you will keep your hives. If the bees do not have an adequate food supply they will not be able to survive and they will not be able to produce a sufficient amount of honey.

Take a quick survey of your area to ensure there are plenty of trees and other flowering plants nearby.

While some types of bees may be willing to travel a short distance for food, most will need to have sources close to the hive.

3. Build Proper Hives: The number one reason most people fail at honey beekeeping is due to improper, or poorly built hives.

You will need to make sure you set up the frames and supers properly, and you will need to make sure the hives are constructed in a manner that you can easily access the combs, but not cause any harm to the bees. You want to keep bee comfort and space in mind at all times.

Beekeeping is becoming an increasingly popular pastime, but to those new to this hobby it may feel a little daunting at first. This short guide to how to keep bees looks at the basics of beekeeping and aims to give you an idea as to what you will need to do to ensure that your bees remain healthy and productive.

Before you obtain your bees you will need to make some necessary preparations, so you will need to make sure that you have all the necessary equipment. Your most obvious piece of beekeeping equipment is the bee hive. There are many different types available, but whatever type you choose it is better to ensure that you choose one and keep with it. The reason for this is that at some stage it is likely you will want to extend your beekeeping to more than one hive you will need to be able to interchange the various parts.

The other main items of beekeeping equipment that you will require are the beekeeping suit, gloves and a smoker. If you are buying the suit second hand you should ensure that you check it thoroughly to ensure that there are no gaps for the bees to get into. There are a number of different smokers available with a range of prices. However, you will find that the cheaper ones dent and corrode easily so will probably only last you one season. If you pay more you will find that they will last you longer.

A frequent question amongst those looking to learn how to keep bees is where to obtain your honeybees from. Your main option for this is to obtain them from a specialist supplier who can send them by mail order in a small nucleus hive. Alternatively, you could see if there is a local beekeeping association in your area who may have a member who could supply you will a small starter colony.

Once you are set up it is case of regular maintenance. You should check your beehive regularly for signs of damage, particularly during the winter months. Any broken or rotten boards should be replaced if possible. If this is not feasible then you should fill gaps with a weatherproof filler.

You should check your bees regularly for signs of mites and treat them as soon as any signs are detected. You should also check for any signs of swarming and take steps to prevent this. The key issue for swarming is space; if your bee colony runs out of space then they will swarm in a bid to find a new home. One factor in ensuring that they have sufficient space is regular honey collection.

In fact it is easier than you might think and it is just as possible in urban areas as it is rural areas. It does not take a great deal of work either – it is more a matter of regular maintenance in order to prevent possible problems.Your first consideration is your beehive. There are many different types available, but the most commonly used around the world is the Langstroth. Different beekeepers have different preferences, but the most important thing is to ensure that you decide on which hive to use and stick to it. The reason for this is that if you have more than one hive you need to be able interchange the parts between your hives.Another consideration in learning how to keep bees is when to start and to introduce bees to your beehive. There is no fixed time to do this, but it is generally accepted that the best time of year is early spring when the bees will just be starting to becoming more active and foraging for nectar.Your routine as a beekeeper will largely be determined by the seasons. In the spring and summer you will need to be checking for mites, preventing swarms and collecting your honey. It is important to collect honey regularly to ensure that the bees do not use up all their space in the hive as this can lead to swarming.During the winter months your main tasks will be concerned with inspecting the hive ensuring that it is in good condition and that the entrances are free of blockages. You will need to provide your bees with food over the winter months. As you can see learning how to keep bees is something that everyone can do regardless of your living circumstances. More and more people are discovering the joys of beekeeping and having a ready supply of sweet honey for themselves or to sell for a profit!

In learning how to keep bees you will find that your planning and your activity is ruled by the seasons. Beekeeping is a wonderful pastime through which you can help to boost the declining honeybee population, not to mention have a ready and plentiful supply of honey. If you manage to produce more honey than you need (which you most certainly will) then you could make a little extra money selling it to friends and neighbors.

Although there is no real set time to start, the best time to begin your beekeeping project is the winter. This is really the planning and preparation period. So during this time you will need to purchase your equipment; principally the bee suit, hive and smoker. You should also think about where you are going to site your bee hive, ideally this should be in a relatively sheltered position facing away from the prevailing wind.

Although not essential, the best time to obtain your bees is early spring so as to make sure that your colony is well established by the time they are collecting nectar and producing honey. You can obtain a starter colony by mail order from specialist suppliers or contact your local beekeeping association who may have a member who has a queen and small colony to spare. It is possible to collect a passing swarm of honey bees, but this is really not recommended for beginners.

During the summer, your bees will be busy collecting nectar, producing honey and reproducing. Your main tasks are to check your bees to make sure that they are free of mites and to make sure that they have plenty of space. The issue of space is important as if they start to run out of room then this will trigger the queen to initiate swarming – essentially this is a case of the bee colony leaving their hive in a bid to find more roomy accommodation. You obviously want to avoid this as this will mean you no longer have any bees. Not only this, but your neighbors might find it a little disturbing to find a swarm of honey bees in the back yard!

Late summer is honey collecting time. This is a sticky and messy task, but highly rewarding. This is after all the reason why you learn how to keep bees. It is a matter of straining the honeycomb to produce clear honey. A honey extractor make the task considerably easier. Alternatively, you could simply cut the honeycomb into pieces and package it into jars as it is.

Over the winter, your colony will be less active and your main task is to check that your beehive remains weather proof, replacing any damaged boards or filling holes with weatherproof filler. You will need to replace the honey that you have taken with sugar water to provide your colony with food.

As you can see, the natural process of keeping bees and producing honey is tied to the rhythm of the seasons and you need to bear this in mind when planning for your beekeeping project.

From midsummer in a good year, many hives will be approaching a crisis point. The worker/gatherer bees, numbering anything around 50,000 in a decent colony, will have brought back home huge quantities of nectar and pollen, and the vacant cells are overflowing.
The Queen has increased by many thousands the number of her brood, and now finds herself encroached upon, and pushed for space in her domain. The hive is extremely crowded, all the combs are fully occupied, and the “fanner” bees, who have the unenviable task of keeping the colony cool, are finding it difficult to cope, and returning bees cluster around the entrance, unwilling to enter this situation.
To add to the pressure, a newly hatching brood due in a week will add to the congeston even more. Something has to be done about this state of affairs, and it has to be done at once. Inactivity (except in winter) is anathema to the bee, and not tolerated in their world.
So the bees prepare to swarm. Of course, the bees who remain with the hive to form the nucleus of a new colony must have a Queen. The original Queen will go with the swarm. Ever efficient, the bees cater for any unexpected accident by preparing for many new Queens. The workers construct special cells by sacrificing other cells around them. These special cells are larger, with thicker walls.
The existing Queen then lays into these specially prepared cells eggs, which would usually hatch into worker bees. However, the nurse bees feed these eggs with richer food, and more of it, enlarge the cells more as the larvae grow. Until the cells are capped, with the new virgin Queens emerging in a week.
At this time restlessness seizes the old Queen, who rushes about, trying in vain to assert her authority, even threatening the young Queens-to-be, and order breaks down. The temperature rises to a point where things are all but intolerable and the bees swarm from the hive. The Queen, having finally left her old home, will settle not too far away initially, in some nearby bush, tree, old log or suchlike, the bees will cluster around her, forming the familiar ball shape of the swarm. This is the time that the beekeeper, if he has been watchful, can gather them up and transport them to a new hive to start anew. Otherwise, within a short time scouts will have found a new permanent home, and the swarm will be lost.
The original hive, now depleted by more than half, now returns to it’s life as though nothing had happened. A few days later the strongest of the new Queens-to-be lets it be known that she is ready to emerge. She will cut the capping of her cell, which has previously been thinned and smoothed by the nurses to aid her exit, press against it, force it open like a hinged lid, and step out onto the comb. The nearest honey cell has her first attention, feeding hungrily. She then devotes her attention to her sisters, finding all the other Queen cells, ripping them open and killing her rivals. If she is not quick enough, or is not allowed by the other bees, she will wait to fight to the death any other potential Queens that may emerge. Alternatively she may decide not to fight for the position of Queen here and join an “afterswarm”. The bee law remains intact. A law of bee life, having very few exceptions, has been upheld. “One Queen – one kingdom”.

Many beginner beekeepers jump right into the hobby without doing any research or looking into proper methods. They believe that if they just purchase all of the best, and most expensive equipment available in the supply stores they will be all set, and their bees will flourish.

The end result is the hive failing, the bees dying, and the beekeeper giving up. After spending a good deal of money, this can be quite frustrating and disappointing. The beginner beekeeper often tries to do too much too soon, with little direction.

You should always take the time to educate yourself on proper bee care, and to seek adequate beekeeping training before you begin this hobby.

You should always make sure you start off correctly with proper techniques, as bad behavior can be difficult to change later on in the process. You should understand that by spending a bit of extra time now, you will be well rewarded in the long run.

Proper beekeeping training can also help you to prevent problems caused by inferior or improper equipment.

You will learn how to construct a functioning hive for optimal bee space, as well as what dimensions the hive should be built to. You will find that this form of training is quite beneficial to both you and your bees. When you learn what to expect, what is normal, and what needs to be done at what time of year, you will be setting yourself up for a successful hobby that you can enjoy for years to come.
